The Apprehension in Meeh

Early on, I took on the role of being a public speaker in High School. I was the President of my class for all four years, and i was also the lead memeber of the leadership class that wrote to get my school an 80 million dollar grant to be rebuilt; i was the actual speaker at the convention. Contrary to many beliefs, once I became a Frosh at SJSU, all of my public speaking ceased to exist.

I entered first semester with the idea to take Comm 20 to improve the areas that needed work. Sadly, i became all but too eager to drop the course. Speech Anxiety, can be discribed as having fear of speaking, and in chapter 2, they offer differnt strategies for building your confidence. The strategy i feel that can help me the most is the step of "Visualiztion, Relabeling, and Relaxtion," the purpose of these three methods is to view speaking in a more positive way and improve effectiveness when you speak.

i can became apprehensive about speaking when i started to think about my audiences reactions, or lack thereof

Wow, by reading this blog it seems to me that you will have no problem in this class. Public speaking is a big role in being the president of your class and to speak at your convention?

But yes, the strategy from chapter two will always be in the back of my mind when speaking in public. After reading chapter two, I think the strategy is very useful and never even thought about it. but now I do and hopefully it will help.

  2. That is cool how you were President of your high school for all 4 years. What high school did you attend? Did you enjoy your role? During first semester in my freshman year, I added comm20 and dropped it as well. I was not thrilled about taking it. I found that visualization was very helpful. I tested the technique from beginning to end. It eased my tense in public speaking, but not a lot. I haven’t tried the relabeling or relaxing techniques, but I plan to before our first speech. It would probably be as helpful as the visualization technique.

  3. BOED: Amazing how you kept your composure with this kid, i would've flipped!!! LOL

Yes public speaking was a big part of being class president, yet i didnt feel as much pressure as i feel now. I agree, chapter 2 has become my favorite chapter because it listed alot of tricks and processes that made speech seemingly easy

  4. KKHONG: Thank You!! I attended Kennedy High School in Richmond, Ca, and being president made school alot of fun for me. I got to plan Jr and Sr prom and all of our senior events.

LOl at the idea that both me and you dropped Comm 20 first year, now i dont feel alone. I agree about the Visualtion Process, i actually covered this concept in my blog about concepts. After reading that process, it kinda showed me speeches in a whole new light.
